“I’m overweight and pregnant and have been advised by the hospital to start doing very gentle exercise as it will help with my pregnancy and birth. Can you suggest something I can do daily that will ease my body into getting fit but is suitable for someone who has shied away from exercise for years!”

Pregnant joggerThe perfect exercise for you is to build as much natural movement into your daily life as possible and that would be walking. It’s simple and effective and will improve your weight and how you feel. As you’re new to exercise it’s also very safe. Start with 20 minutes of walking 4 times a week for 2 weeks at a pace where you can still hold a conversation but you feel warm. Then add 5 minutes to each walk for weeks 3-4. Following that try to add 5 minutes to each walk after every 2 weeks. Wear athletic trainers and comfortable clothing and sip water every 15 minutes or so to avoid de-hydrating.
